Julie Berry

Julie Berry's artistic journey spans decades, originating from her formative years at Brigham Young University where she earned a BFA in the early 1980s. Her creative evolution has been a constant thread throughout her life, manifesting in diverse expressions and mediums. For two decades, she honed her craft as a decorative artist, leaving her mark on spaces across Texas, Chicago, New York City, and Florida with residential and commercial murals and wall finishes.

However, Julie's most cherished creations emerge from her role as a mother to five children and as Mimi to 19 grandchildren. Following a remarriage and "retirement" in 2022, supported by her loving husband and family, Julie embraced a new chapter in her artistic pursuit, free from the constraints of commission work.

As an artist, Julie sees herself as a storyteller, particularly when portraying individuals. Each piece she creates begins with a portrait, serving as the foundation upon which layers of her own mono-prints, fabrics, and other embellishments are added, weaving intricate narratives. Embracing collage techniques, Julie breathes life into her work, infusing it with the essence of both the artist and the subject. Every portrait becomes an adventurous exploration, delving into the unique qualities and characteristics of each her people.

In recent years, Julie's artistic talents has garnered recognition, including acceptance into three prestigious Springville Museum of Art Shows and being the featured artist at the 2024 CNS Art and Soup Show. Fondly referring to her creations as her "people," Julie finds joy in knowing that her art has found its place in the world.

What About Utah Inspires You?

The People of Utah inspire me. Through my career as an artist I have painted in many different styles and with various mediums. My current work is focused on and inspired by the human figure and the connection I feel to my subjects. I believe when the subject matter is a person, my role as an artist-is a storyteller. My portraits come to life in a compelling way that tells who the person is. Mixed media artwork is the perfect vehicle for such connections. I connect and create on a deeper level, carefully unfolding the edges of their story in a captivating way.  The stories begins with a portrait and then, piece by piece it evolves with layers of rich texture, mono prints, fabrics, and various embellishments. Using these techniques, I feel my work comes to life with the personality of both artist and subject. Each portrait is an adventure, exploring the unique characteristics and qualities of both.  The blend of my curiosity and love for the human experience is key to my work.  I invite the viewer to look closely. Perhaps we will both learn to see people in a new way.
