Vita Rice

Vita Rice is a Utah based fine artist creating vivid and intriguing mixed media artworks that are meant to evoke and entrance the viewer, bringing them into presence with their visual sense as they take time with the artwork. Inextricably woven into her artwork is Vita's desire to create something that can be explored for hours, over and over again. Vita believes that a painting – like a good book – can be a voyage, a destination, a space to find solace, and a place to be revisited. She draws endless inspiration from the minute details of nature, from her philosophical conceptualizations of energetics, and her emotional and spiritual journey as an individual and member of the collective. Vita facilitates the use of small brushwork, limited color palettes, and a dedication to fine detail to create dramatic works on primarily raw unprimed, initially unstretched canvas.

The question truly is, what about Utah doesn't inspire? From the ripe, green, and unfurling springtimes in the SL Valley to the rusty landscapes to our south, to the raw grey peaks of the Uintas, still dotted with snow in the hottest summer months -- I am deeply inspired by the minutae of this place. I've been all over the world, and Utah has some of the best cloud-scapes I've seen. The dynamics of atmospheric wind and moisture make for interesting levels and variations of cloud formation and movement, all of which informs my work. I am stunned without fail by the purple, orange, green, blue, and yellow rocks that layer across the state, scattered down exposed scree fields, piled in dry washes, and strewn along the edges of cascading mountain streams. There is so much value in paying attention, in Utah. Every view has nuggets of inspirational gold.
